The Eldoret International Airport was completed in 1997 and was commissioned in 1998 to serve as centrepiece of North Rift and western region on large potential of agriculture. However during its first decade, The Airport didn’t release a fulfilling commercial aspect. it became apparent to the Kenyan government that the capacity available at Eldoret Airport would not be able to handle the long-term Cargo demand if well exploited. Consequently the Government appointed a commissioned to make detailed report covering the business promotion at the airport.

As part of the report, the landing was weived ,landing and Navigational fees was concessioned at 50% .it was also agreed that private sector be involved to build up both cold and dry cargo storage facility  adequately for the future traffic demand. We also recommended for the expansion of the turning loop.

On February 20th, 2007. Cancen International  ltd privately owned company ,commissioned commissioned a dry  cargo warehouse of 150 metric tonnes in addition to the same capacity existing operated on  lease by signon freight and a year later a cold storage of 230 metric tonnes was completed enhancing the capacity of cold storage and birth to ever first perishable export from the airport October 2007. The export of perishables and fresh cut flowers continue through the airport and the potential grows into the future.

At policy level KAA has adopted apro-active approach. We intent to work closely with the UNEP quantify the amount of emissions we are responsible. A pilot  project to mitigate this was  initiated by planting 600 acres of eucalyptus  trees 3yrs ago at EIA, a further 100 acres has been planted at Eldoret Airstrip 2008 April.

Named after Eldoret town, EIA today is the 3rd biggest International Airport in Kenya and  is also the focal point for major cargo activity in the region. Its importance as a cargo hub centre makes it the pacesetter for other airports in the region.
