First Commercial Flight Flagged Off by DP Gachagua Lands in Kakamega

H.E. Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua while in the company of Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Roads and Transport, Kipchumba Murkomen and KAA MD, Alex Gitari, today presided over the launch of the first commercial flight by Skyward Express from Wilson Airport in Nairobi to Kakamega County.

The inaugural flight, comes just days after H.E. President Dr. William Ruto commissioned Kakamega Airstrip’s newly rehabilitated Runway and Taxiway and its expanded Apron.

During the flag-off, the Deputy President noted that the government is keen in growing partnerships with the private sector, including airline operators.

“This is in our quest to improve the country’s business environment. Air transport should no longer be a luxury for the chosen few,” Gachagua said.

While receiving the aircraft at Kakamega Airstrip, Kakamega Governor, H.E. Frenandes Barasa thanked Skyward Express for being part of the county’s historic journey, and invited other airlines to join in the profitable venture expected to open the region to business opportunities and tourism.

While giving her remarks, KAA Regional Airport Manager in charge of Kisumu International Airport and Western Region, Ms. Selina Gor said that the flight by Skyward Express will strengthen the Lake Region Economic Bloc and Kakamega’s position as an entry point into Western Kenya.

“On our part as Kenya Airports Authority Western region, we assure you of our commitment and support, to deliver a conducive and enabling environment for your operations in Kakamega.” She added

KAA MD, Alex Gitari noted that the authority is working in line with the government’s vision of improving air connectivity in the country.

“We have a number of other airstrip projects set to be commissioned soon, this includes Migori & Kitale. Other facilities like Nanyuki & Lanet are also nearing completion.” Gitari Said.

Following the recent upgrade, Kakamega Airstrip can now accommodate Code C aircraft – Q300, Fokker 50 and CRJ in line with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards.

The expansion and subsequent expansion of the Airstrip will be an important enabler to achieving economic growth and development in the County.
