History was made last night as Kenya launched her direct flights from Mombasa to Dubai. The first Kenya Airways flight took off after Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua presided over the launch at Moi International Airport (MIA). ‘It is a great moment for Kenya as the inaugural flight for our National Carrier, Kenya Airways, to Dubai from Mombasa’s Moi International Airport takes to the skies,” he said.
The DP noted that the event was historic as it is a dynamic way to sustain millions of jobs from the tourism sector. “By connecting the Kenyan Coast to the Middle East directly, the travel time is effectively reduced, making Kenya the most attractive destination for the Middle East tourists,” Gachagua added.
While speaking on the sidelines of the event, KAA Managing Director, Alex Gitari noted that the city of Mombasa is internationally recognized as one of the most attractive tourist destinations in Africa and therefore the introduction of the new route by KQ was key & strategic not only to the national airline but also to the airport.
“By having direct access to and from the Middle East, this new flight will greatly contribute towards the growth of passenger traffic at this airport, enabling Moi International Airport to become the premier tourist hub of the East African region.” Gitari added.
Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) recently completed the rehabilitation & expansion of the Airside Pavements i.e the Runway, Taxiway & Apron as well as the Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL) systems at MIA. This has greatly improved the airport’s safety and efficiency standards; ensuring that air operators enjoy world class airport services and facilities.
The D.P. was accompanied by CS Ministry of Roads and Transport, Kipchumba Murkomen, CS Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, Peninah Malonza, Mombasa Governor, Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir, Taita Taveta Governor, Andrew Mwadime, a host of MPs among other top government officials.
