September 13, 2013: Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has converted the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) Parking Garage into a temporary International Arrivals facility to provide improved services for international passengers. The newly-converted International Arrivals facility will replace the previous temporary tented International Arrivals set up four weeks ago at the JKIA State Pavilion.

“This International Arrivals facility at the JKIA Parking Garage has the capacity to handle the normal number of international passengers arriving at JKIA daily and allows us to begin to remove the tentage on the airside,” the Acting Managing Director of Kenya Airports Authority Lucy Mbugua said.

On average, 8,500 international passengers arrive at JKIA every day. Ms Mbugua was addressing journalists after a tour of the JKIA passenger facilities.

Besides the newly converted International Arrivals (JKIA Parking Garage), the authority has also reopened Unit 2 from which all flights by national carrier, Kenya Airways, will operate from.
Temporary tentage set up on the JKIA airside began to come down today as the authority continues to move operations into the re-opened buildings.
At the same time, KAA said that it is working with development partners such as the World Bank and the African Development Bank to construct a temporary International Arrivals on the JKIA airside and to import a temporary Airport terminal.

“We are making arrangements to bring in a new prefabricated airport terminal because we are only using the JKIA garage as a temporary measure for the next four months. We are also accelerating work on Terminal 4 so that it is ready for use by end of the year,” Ms Mbugua stated.

After Terminal 4 comes into operation, she said, Units 1, 2 and 3 will be reorganized and refurbished in line with earlier plans for JKIA. KAA also confirmed that the burnt down international arrivals terminal will be brought down and a new terminal constructed.

According to Ms Mbugua, the decision was based on recommendations from preliminary findings of ongoing investigations conducted on the building.

“Investigations are still ongoing and the final report on what caused the fire will be released by the relevant security agencies,” she stated, adding that insurance assessment is still ongoing, in which the authority is working well with its insurer APA Insurance.

On domestic flights, Ms Mbugua said that work is ongoing to ensure that domestic flight operations are returned to Unit 3 by the end of this month. Currently, the domestic flights operate from the JKIA Cargo terminal.
