NAIROBI SEPTEMBER 13, 2021 – On Thursday 9th September, 2021, Kenya Airports Authority Managing Director, Alex Gitari received the 2020 awards for the Best Airport by Size and Region awarded to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), and Moi International Airport (MIA), Mombasa at a ceremony held at the just concluded 3rd  Airports Council International (ACI) Customer Experience Global Summit held in Montreal, Canada.

JKIA won the 2020 Best Airport by Size and Region in the 5 – 15 million passengers per year category while MIA won the 2020 Best Airport by Size and Region in the under 2 million passengers per year category based on the results of ACI’s Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Survey. The survey captures passengers’ experience at all airport passenger contact points and attracts participation of more than 300 airports worldwide.

JKIA and Moi International Airport Win ACI’s Best Airports in Africa

NAIROBI March 01, 2021 –Airports Council International (ACI) – the voice of world airports; has today awarded the coveted Best Airport by Size and Region to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), Nairobi, and Moi International Airport (MIA), Mombasa for their excellence in customer service.

JKIA won the 2020 Best Airport by Size and Region in the 5 – 15 million passengers per year in Africa while MIA won the 2020 Best Airport by Size and Region under 2 million passengers per year in Africa in ACI’s Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Survey. ASQ is the world’s leading airport customer experience measurement and benchmarking programme.  The survey captures passengers’ experience at all airport passenger contact points at more than 300 airports worldwide.

While officially writing to the Authority on the awards, ACI World Director General, Luis Felipe de Oliveira congratulated Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) for its efforts in improving customer experience.

KAA Receives International Recognition from Airports Council International

NAIROBI FEBRUARY 8, 2021 – Airports Council International (ACI) – the voice of world airports; has today recognized Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) in its World’s Voice of the Customer Initiative. This initiative recognizes airports that continued to prioritize their customers and remained committed to ensuring that their voice was heard during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The recognition is a testament to KAA’s deliberate commitment to service excellence.

ACI’s Airport Service Quality (ASQ) is a world-renowned and globally established global benchmarking program which measures passengers’ satisfaction whilst they are travelling through an airport. Jomo Kenyatta International Airport-Nairobi and Moi International Airport – Mombasa have participated in the ASQ program for over 10 years.

To further ensure our customers travel stress free during this current Covid-19 pandemic environment, KAA has put World Health Organization (WHO) and International Civil Aviation (ICAO) health recommended protocols in place. We are also in the process of attaining ACI’s Airport Health Accreditation (AHA); a global benchmark, independently assessing an airport’s alignment with ACI Aviation Business Restart and Recovery Guidelines and the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Council’s Aviation Restart Task Force recommendations, as well as industry best practices, in the fight against the spread of COVID-19.

Refurbishment and Upgrade of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport – Update

NAIROBI JANUARY 16, 2021 – Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has embarked on a 12-months renovation project to upgrade the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport’s (JKIA) Terminal 1B and 1C in a bid to improve the customer experience and enhance the airport as the preferred regional aviation hub.

The Authority has subsequently closed the two terminals to pave way for the project. All flight operations previously in T1B and T1C have now been migrated to Terminal 1A and Terminal 2.

The following is a summary of operational terminal changes at JKIA.

Refurbishment and Upgrade of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport

Nairobi  7th January, 2021 – Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) is committed to positioning JKIA as the preferred regional aviation hub.  In this regard, KAA has embarked on a renovation project to upgrade the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport’s Terminal 1B and 1C.

 The 12-month airport development project which is estimated to cost KES. 963 million aims to refurbish the departure halls to improve the check-in, security screening, retail operations as well as passenger lounge experience.

Once completed, the newly renovated light-filled departure terminals will deliver modern concessions and amenities that will give travelers a friendly and memorable experience. It will also ease passenger flow and increase efficiency due to the centralization of security screening procedures and the reallocation of available floor spaces to international departure gates.

The refurbishment and facelift of the T1B & 1C aims to align the passenger experience in these terminals to match what is offered at T1A. said KAA Ag. MD/CEO Alex Gitari. “The remodeling project is an integral part of the ongoing JKIA Customer Service Improvement Plan (CSIP) which was formulated from feedback from our stakeholders and customers”, he added.

To expedite the implementation of this project, Airlines that have been operating from Terminal 1B and 1C are being temporarily relocated to Terminal 1A and Terminal 2. To minimize inconveniences, passengers are requested to arrive at the airport at least 4 hours before their flight departures.

KAA ups Fire-Fighting Capacity With Acquisition of Trucks Worth Ksh 369 Million

Nairobi, 11th March, 2020:  The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has commissioned four new airport rescue and fire-fighting trucks acquired at a cost of Ksh 369 million.

The four trucks are destined for use at the Moi International Airport(MIA), the Kisumu International Airport (KIA), the Eldoret International Airport (EIA) and Lodwar Airport.

The firefighting trucks are in addition to two which were commissioned in March last year and at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) as part of the ongoing modernisation of local airports and airstrips in the country.

The trucks include three Mercedes Benz Titan trucks with engine capacity of 700 horsepower, a top speed of 120 kilometres per hour with acceleration of 80 kilometres per hour in 25 seconds. With a weight of 34 tonnes the trucks carry a water and foam capacity of 12, 500 litres and 1,500 litres respectively.

The other truck is a Mercedes Benz AROC with an engine capacity of 456 horsepower, a top speed of 100 kilometres per hour with an acceleration speed of 80 kilometres per hour in 27 seconds. The truck has a water capacity of 5000 litres and a foam capacity of 600 litres.

According to Alex Gitari, the Acting Managing Director, KAA, the ultra-modern trucks will help KAA in meeting the challenges and demands of disaster management in the local aviation sector.

“As technology in aircraft production increases other sectors of the industry like ground support infrastructure and services like fire cover must also be upgraded to meet industry demands. We assure our customers, including our esteemed airlines that safety is our top priority at KAA and we are pledging to provide resources to ensure our airports meet the highest safety standards that go beyond the regulatory requirements.” He added.

The airports, he said, were the first and last points of contact for visitors and travelling public, and for whom safety was of major concern while using the airports. The trucks, he added, would go a long way in ensuring that airports transitioned quickly to recover and resume normal operations in case of emergencies like aircraft accidents and domestic fires.

The airports emergency response teams in Kenya comprise of airlines, ground handlers, hospitals, ambulance operators the county governments, security agencies and the neighbouring communities around the airports.

Statement on Hosting The 63rd ACI Africa Board & Regional Committees’ Meetings & Regional Conference

Kenya Airports Authority has received the Government of Kenya’s directive to postpone all conferences and meetings of an international nature for the next 30 days. This is due to the ongoing global threat from the Coronavirus (COVID-19).

The Government directive is in the interest of safeguarding the health and well-being of Kenyans and visitors.

In compliance with this directive, the 63rd ACI Africa Board and Regional Committees Meetings and Regional Conference planned to take place in Mombasa from 14t· -20th March 2020 stands postponed to a later date which will be communicated in due course.

Swissport Kenya Wins The 2nd Edition of The Aviation Business Excellence Awards

NAIROBI – NOVEMBER 18TH 2019 : The second edition of the Aviation Business Excellence Awards (ABEA) took place on Friday, November 15, 2019 where Swissport Kenya Limited was crowned ABEA 2019 company of the year.

The Hilton Garden Inn, which was ABEA 2019 company of the year first runners up also emerged top in the hospitality Services – hotels category. The Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service (KEPHIS) won in the government services category followed by the Kenya Revenue Authority.

Feted at an African themed gala dinner held at the Emara-Ole Sereni Hotel and which was attended by over 350 industry stakeholders, Swissport also won in the ground handling services category. Trade Winds Aviation Services were first runners up.

Speaking at the event, Alex Gitari, the acting Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer at Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) said;
“Since ABEA 2018, we continue to see a growing interest in participating companies. I am happy to note that of the 65 companies who submitted entries for ABEA 2019, 32 duly completed the nomination process with 16 companies coming back for the second time. This is a clear demonstration of the value the industry is starting to derive from the ABEA initiative.”

Other notable winners of the night included DB Schenker in the customs agents category, Maya Duty Free in the retail shops services category and Express Travel Group in the ground transport services category.

Paul Caffe Kenya was victorious in the hospitality services – restaurants category with Kenya Airways claiming the prize for airline services – cargo category. Etihad Airways emerged victorious in the airline services – passenger category.

ABEA 2019 follows the successful launch of ABEA in May 2018 and which culminated in the inaugural ABEA gala dinner in November 2018, where 19 organizations completed the nomination process out of the 39 that submitted entries.

ABEA 2019 sought to assess participating companies based on three determinants 1. Leadership and Management, 2. Human Resource focus and 3. Customer Orientation and Marketing. ABEA is sponsored by the KAA and managed and moderated by the Kenya Institute of Management (KIM) in a partnership arrangement.

Murithi Ndegwa, the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer KIM said the ABEA business self-assessment tool was developed based on the KIM Organizational Performance Index (OPI) framework for the evaluation of the performance of the participating organizations.

“Through OPI, ABEA participating organisations were rated on a scale of 1-10, according to their performance and competitiveness. This model sets a minimum score that an organisation must attain to remain competitive and the rating is determined following a rigorous internal and external assessment process”. he said.
Ndegwa explained that each organisation’s processes were assessed and combined with its business results using a weighted formula to determine the scores for a set of global determinants and sectoral indicators.

He added that, the nomination and selection judging panel included experts from the aviation industry, based on their experience and insights on the sector and which was a recommendation from ABEA 2018.

Some of the objectives of ABEA include; improving the customer experience journey at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), while recognizing and encouraging learning and best practices within the industry with a view to making all the industry players more competitive.

ABEA aims to reach about 120 stakeholders in the aviation sector, with a vision to become a premier aviation excellence award in Africa.

Kenya Airports Authority Announces A Leadership Transition

NAIROBI – SEPTEMBER 30TH 2019 The Board of Directors, Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has appointed Mr. Alex Gitari, the current General Manager Finance as the Acting Managing Director/CEO, effective 1st October 2019.

Mr. Alex Gitari has a wealth of experience, which covers a broad range of functions including development banking, accounting and financial management, treasury management, resource mobilization, business development and marketing, project appraisal, strategy formulation and execution, policy formulation, risk management and management of strategic partnerships.

KAA Managing Director, Mr. Jonny Andersen has started his leave, with his contract due to expire on November 21st 2019.

“I take this opportunity to thank Jonny for his contribution during his tenure as CEO and wish him the very best as he commences the next chapter of his career” said KAA Chairman Isaac Awuondo.

The recruitment process for a new CEO/Managing Director will commence on 1st October 2019. This will be through a competitive process as per State Corporations Guidelines.

Silverstone launches daily flights on Homabay route

NAIROBI – SEPTEMBER  2ND 2019 : Travellers can now fly daily from Nairobi to Homabay after Silverstone introduced a passenger plane on the route.Silverstone Air has deployed a 37-seater plane that will operate from Wilson Airport in Nairobi to Kabunde Airstrip in Homabay.
The local carrier becomes the third airline to operate on the route after Fly 540 and Blue Sky Aviation which already ply the route but on select days of the week.
Silverstone’s chief operating officer David Ojwang and the sales and marketing manager Patrick Okech said the airline will offer daily morning flights.
The plane will depart Wilson airport at 7.30 am for Kabunde and make a return trip at 8.35 am.“We are also contemplating on introducing afternoon flights should demand for our services increase,” Ojwang said. Fares are pegged at Sh6,500 one way.Homa Bay Deputy Governor Hamilton Orata said the airline will boost business in the entire South Nyanza region.
