President Ruto Breaks Ground for Narok Airport to Boost Tourism and Connectivity

Narok, Kenya – May 6, 2025 — His Excellency President William Ruto today presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for the highly anticipated Narok Airport, marking a significant milestone in Kenya’s ongoing efforts to enhance regional connectivity and boost the nation’s tourism sector. The ceremony was attended by distinguished dignitaries, including Principal Secretary for Transport Mr. Mohamed Daghar, Principal Secretary for Aviation and Aerospace Development Ms. Teresia Mbaika, and Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) Chairman Hon. Caleb Kositany, among others.

Strategically located just 12 kilometers from Narok’s central business district and 79 kilometers from the iconic Maasai Mara’s Sekenani Gate, the new airport will span 329 acres (133 hectares). This prime location is set to greatly ease travel for both domestic and international visitors to one of Africa’s most celebrated wildlife destinations.

Speaking at the event, President Ruto emphasized that the Narok Airport project fulfills a longstanding promise to the people of Narok. “This airport will make the region more accessible for tourists and investors alike, unlocking new opportunities for economic growth and development,” he said.

The first phase of the project will involve the complete reconstruction of the existing murram runway into a modern 1.5-kilometer asphalt runway, 30 meters wide, complete with an apron and taxiways. Future plans include extending the runway to 1.8 kilometers following the acquisition of an additional 64 acres, further enhancing the airport’s capacity and operational efficiency.

KAA Chairman Hon. Caleb Kositany reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to delivering world-class aviation infrastructure that supports Kenya’s vision of becoming a leading tourism and investment destination in Africa.

The Narok Airport project is poised to transform the region’s connectivity, stimulate economic activity, and strengthen Kenya’s position as a premier tourism hub.
